Stump grinding in Harahan clears away the stump a removed tree leaves behind, grinding it into wood chips so the spot can go back to grass, a bed or a new tree. Big Easy Tree Cutting grinds stumps for Harahan homes and commercial properties, and we start every job with a free estimate.
A stump can sit in a yard for years after the tree is gone, especially when a storm cleanup stopped at ground level. Big Easy Tree Cutting can take care of that last step. Our main stump grinding services page explains the service in general; this page focuses on what matters for Harahan properties.

A stump grinder chews the stump down into chips, working at and just below the soil surface. How deep we go depends on the stump and on what you want to do with the spot next, so we settle that during the estimate.
A few things to expect:
Our article on why stump grinding matters for a safe yard covers the everyday reasons people get it done.
This Harahan rule is easy to miss. Once a stump near the street is ground out, the natural next step is to plant a replacement in the same spot. In Harahan, that spot may need permission.
Harahan Code Sec. 30-44(a) says: “Trees may not be planted in the lawn measured from the edge of the sidewalk to the curb of the street, without approval of the city council.” So if the old stump sat in that strip between sidewalk and curb, check with the City of Harahan before you plant anything new there. A tree set back on your side of the sidewalk is a different situation.
Also keep in mind that the city, through its tree board, is responsible for trees on public property. If you are not sure whether a stump sits on your land or the city’s, find out before any grinding happens. Our tree removal in Harahan page explains how the tree board works.
Grinding happens right where water, gas, cable and irrigation lines can run close to the surface. Louisiana’s damage prevention law defines “excavation” broadly, as any operation that moves or removes earth by powered, mechanical or manual means and could reasonably damage underground facilities (La. R.S. 40:1749.12). The statute does not mention stump grinding by name, and we will not claim it does.
Our recommendation is straightforward: call 811 before digging-type work near the stump, and definitely before digging a hole for a new tree. Point out anything you installed yourself as well, such as sprinkler lines, low-voltage lighting or a buried pet fence.

Some people wait on a stump, and that is a fair choice. Here is how the two options compare:
| Leave the stump | Grind the stump | |—|—| | No work now | Clear, usable ground | | Mowing around it for years | Mow straight over the spot | | Possible sprouts and decay | Chips you can reuse as mulch | | Tripping hazard stays | A cleaner yard for replanting |
Some homeowners also think about renting a grinder. These are heavy machines with a fast-spinning cutting wheel that can throw chips and debris, and they work close to whatever is buried under the stump. Our post on reasons to hire a pro for stump grinding walks through what to weigh before you try it yourself.
If other trees in the yard have you worried while you are at it, our Harahan arborist services page covers health checks and pruning advice for the trees you want to keep.

Only with city approval if the spot is between the sidewalk and the curb. Harahan’s code says trees may not be planted in the lawn from the edge of the sidewalk to the curb without approval of the city council. Check with the City of Harahan before planting there.
Grinding removes the stump, and the larger roots generally stay in the ground and break down over time. Some species can send up sprouts from those roots for a while.
We recommend it as a precaution, especially if you plan to dig a planting hole afterward. Louisiana’s damage prevention law defines excavation broadly, although it does not name stump grinding.
The stump becomes wood chips that can be used as mulch or to help fill the hole. Tell us during the estimate how you would like them handled.
The City of Harahan, through its tree board, is responsible for trees on public property. Contact the city about a stump in the right-of-way before arranging any work.
Yes, every estimate is free. We look at the stump, the space around it, and how the grinder can reach it before agreeing on a scope with you.
